หลังจากที่นักศึกษาได้พอทราบมาแล้วว่า will กับ would ใช้ในกรณีใดได้บ้าง คราวนี้เราก็จะมาดูกันต่อว่า shall นั้น มีขอบเขตการใช้ได้แค่ไหน
การใช้ Modal Verb : Shall
นิยามการใช้ shall นั้น มีการนำไปใช้เหมือนกับ will คือ
1. ใช้ shall สำหรับ Future Tense
2. ใช้ shall เพื่อแสดงถึงการขอร้องหรือการเสนออย่างสุภาพ (Requests and offers)
3. ใช้ shall เพื่อสร้างประโยคเงื่อนไข (Conditional sentences)
4. ใช้ shall เพื่อแสดงถึงคำสั่งหรือหลักปฏิบัติ (Maxims or Commands)
นอกจากนั้นแล้ว shall ยังใช้เพื่อเพิ่มความสุภาพและทางการ ซึ่งบางครั้งใช้ will ไม่ได้ และปกติเราจะใช้ shall สำหรับประธาน I และ We เท่านั้น แต่ก็ไม่เป็นกฎตายตัว เมื่อใช้เป็นประโยคคำสั่ง
การใช้ shall สำหรับ future simple tense และ future continuous tense
ตามปกติแล้วในโครงสร้าง Future Tense เราจะใช้ will หรือ be going to เป็นหลัก แต่เราสามารถใช้ shall ได้ เพื่อเพิ่มความเป็นทางการหรือความสุภาพ (formality or politeness)พิจารณาตัวอย่างประโยค
• “I shall call from the airport.” (future simple tense)
• “We shall be staying in private accommodation.”
• “Our company shall not be held accountable for this.”
เราสามารถใช้ shall กับ future perfect และ future perfect continuous tenses ได้ด้วย (ใช้น้อย)
พิจารณาตัวอย่างประโยค
• “As of next week, I shall have worked here for 50 years.”
• “By the time the opera begins, we shall have been waiting for over an hour.”
หมายเหตุ
การใช้ shall ใน Future Tense นั้น จะพบในการเขียนที่มีลักษณะทางการ หรือ ความสุภาพมากกว่า will
การใช้ shall เพื่อการเสนอ เชิญ หรือ แนะนำอย่างสุภาพ
พิจารณาตัวอย่างประโยค• “Shall we walk along the beach?”
(เรามาเดินตามชายหาดกันไหม)
• “Shall I wash the dishes?”
(ขอให้ฉันล้างจานได้ไหม)
การตั้งประโยคคำถามด้วย shall เมื่อต้องการคำแนะนำหรือความคิดเห็นอย่างสุภาพ
พิจารณาตัวอย่างประโยค
• “What shall I do with this spare part?”
(ฉันควรทำอะไรกับส่วนที่เหลือนี้)
• “Where shall we begin?”
(เราควรจะเริ่มต้นที่ไหน)
• “Who shall I invite to the meal?”
(ฉันควรจะเชิญใครมาทานอาหาร)
การใช้ shall กับประโยคเงื่อนไข
เราจะใช้ shall กับประโยคเงื่อนไข (Conditional sentences) ประเภท First Conditional (แบบที่ 1)พิจารณาตัวอย่างประโยค
• “I shall contact the post office if my package has not arrived by tomorrow.”
(ฉันจะติดต่อไปรษณีย์ ถ้าพัสดุของฉันไม่มาถึงในวันพรุ่งนี้)
การใช้ shall กับ คำสั่งที่เป็นทางการ (Formal commands)
เราอาจจะเห็นบ่อยในการประกาศ ข้อบังคับ หลักปฏิบัติที่เป็นทางการ นิยมใช้ shallพิจารณาตัวอย่างประโยค
• “This establishment shall not be held liable for lost or stolen property.”
(การรับประกันนี้จะไม่รับผิดชอบกรณีทรัพย์สินถูกขโมยหรือสูญหาย)
• “Students shall remain silent throughout the exam.”
(นักเรียนจะต้องอยู่ในความสงบตลอดช่วงเวลาสอบ)
• “The new law dictates that no citizen shall be out on the streets after 11 PM.”
(กฎหมายใหม่ออกข้อบังคับว่า ห้ามพลเรือนออกไปบนถนนหลัง 5 ทุ่ม)
• “You shall cease this foolishness at once!”
(คุณต้องเลิกความโง่นี้เดี๋ยวนี้!)
หมายเหตุ การใช้แทนกัน ของ Modal Verb
จากที่ผมได้กล่าวมาแล้วว่า Modal Auxiliary Verbs นั้นสามารถใช้แทนกันได้ในบางกรณี เช่น เราใช้ should แทน shall ในกรณีที่คำสั่งนั้นไม่เชิงบังคับ หรือ เป็นเพียงคำแนะนำ แต่ถ้าคำสั่งนั้นเป็นคำสั่งที่เป็นข้อปฏิบัติหรือเป็นข้อกำหนด เราจะต้องใช้ shall ซึ่งจะพบว่าในการเขียนกฎหมาย ข้อบังคับต่าง ๆ ที่เป็นทางการจะใช้ shall ครับ
